How to play Make the Number
Combine the numbers you’re given with + − × ÷ to make the target exactly, using each number at most once. Also known as Numbers game, Target number, Reach the number.
The rules
- You may add, subtract, multiply and divide.
- Each number can be used once; the answers you make can be used again in later steps.
- Every step must give a positive whole number — no negatives or fractions.
- With the ‘use every number’ rule, all the numbers must be used.
Playing Make the Number on Puzzle Solvers
- Choose the numbers (4 small for kids, or 6 with big ones), the rule and a difficulty, then press New Puzzle.
- Tap a number, a sign (+ − × ÷), then another number. The two cards become their answer.
- Keep going until a card shows the target. ↶ steps back; every step must be a positive whole number.
- Hint shows a next step that still reaches the target from where you are.
Using the Make the Number solver
- Choose how many numbers and whether every number must be used, then enter the numbers and the target (or press Sample).
- Press Solve to see the shortest way to make the target — or the closest you can get.
A worked example
Numbers 100, 75, 6, 3, 2, 1 — target 523.
6 − 1 = 5, 5 × 100 = 500, 500 + 3 = 503… the gap is 20, which is too hard. Instead: 75 − 2 = 73, 73 × 6 = 438, 438 + 100 = 538, 538 − 3 = 535… Use the solver to see the shortest route!
Strategies
- Get close with ×. Multiply to land near the target: for 952, 9 × 100 = 900 is a good start.
- Fix the difference. Then make the gap with what’s left: 952 − 900 = 52, and 50 + 2 = 52.
- Work backwards. If the target is a multiple of a number you have, try making the other factor.
- Save small numbers. 1s and 2s are great for adjusting at the end — don’t use them up too early.
- Check the remainder. Target minus a big product should be something you can make from the leftovers.
Common mistakes
- Using the same number twice.
- Dividing when it doesn’t go exactly.
- Making a negative step — always take the smaller number from the bigger one.
Where it comes from
Target-number games have been played in classrooms and on television for decades, and are a favourite way to practise all four operations.
Frequently asked questions
Is there always a way to make the target?
Yes — every generated puzzle can be made exactly. The solver also finds the closest answer when a target can’t be made.
What are the big numbers?
In the six-number versions, some cards are 25, 50, 75 or 100.
Can I play with younger children?
Yes — choose ‘4 small (kids)’ for numbers 1 to 10 and targets up to about 100.
How do I check a puzzle I set myself?
Open the Make the Number Solver, enter the numbers and target and press Solve.
