How to play Edge Letters

Each row and each column contains every letter of the set โ€” say A, B and C โ€” exactly once. The remaining squares are blank.

Letters around the edge are lookouts: a B on the left of a row means that, looking along the row from the left, the first letter you meet is B. There may be blanks before it.

Start with edge letters on opposite sides of a short line, and with lines that already have most of their letters.

How to play Edge Letters

Place each letter exactly once in every row and column, with blank squares between; edge letters show which letter you meet first from that side.

The rules

  1. Each row and each column contains every letter of the set exactly once.
  2. The other squares in each row and column are blank.
  3. A letter outside the grid is the first letter you meet when you look along that row or column from that side. Blank squares may come before it.

  3. Turn on โœŽ notes to pencil in possible letters.
  4. Edge letters turn green when the first letter seen from that side is right. Hint explains the next deduction.

Questions

Do blanks count as letters?

No โ€” blanks are simply empty squares and are skipped when you look in from the edge.

Why do some puzzles have letters inside the grid?

A few given letters are added when the edge clues alone would allow more than one answer.

Is there always one answer?

Yes โ€” every puzzle here is checked to have exactly one solution.

How do I solve one from a book?

Open the Edge Letters Solver, type the edge letters and press Solve.
