How to play Number Blocks

Number Blocks is a gentle but clever number puzzle. The grid is split into blocks of different sizes; a block of 3 squares holds 1, 2 and 3, a block of 5 holds 1 to 5.

The twist: the same number can never be in two squares that touch, not even diagonally. That one rule links the blocks together and makes every puzzle solvable by logic.

Choose Sides only for a version where numbers may touch at corners — a little easier, and great for beginners.

How to play Number Blocks

Fill each block of n squares with the numbers 1 to n, so that no two touching squares hold the same number.

The rules

  1. The grid is divided into blocks outlined in bold.
  2. A block with n squares contains each number from 1 to n exactly once.
  3. Squares that touch — across a side or at a corner — never hold the same number (in the ‘sides only’ version, corners may touch).
  4. Given numbers can’t be changed.

Playing here

  1. Choose whether numbers can’t touch at corners or only at sides, the biggest block, a size and a difficulty, then press New Puzzle.
  2. Tap a square, then a number on the pad (or type it). Use Notes (N, or Shift + number) to pencil in options.
  3. Clashes turn red as you go. Turn on Show block sizes for a reminder of each block’s size.
  4. Hint explains the next number — single squares, the only place left in a block, and numbers ruled out by touching.
