Nonogram: rules, tips and more help

Shade cells so each row and column matches its number clue — and a picture appears.

The rules

  1. Each row and column has a clue: a list of numbers such as 3 1 2.
  2. Each number is a block of that many shaded cells in a row, in that order.
  3. Blocks are separated by at least one empty cell.
  4. When every clue is satisfied, the shaded cells form a picture.

Questions

What is the overlap method?

Placing the blocks at both extremes and shading the cells covered both times. The row calculator shows the overlap instantly.

Do clues tell me where the blocks start?

No — only their lengths and order. Working out where they go is the puzzle.

Is every nonogram solvable by logic?

Well-made ones are. Some randomly made grids have several solutions and need guessing.
