How to play Factor Trail

A number maze with a rule. In the factors and multiples version, each step goes to a number that divides the one you are on, or that it divides: from 12 you could step to 4, 6, 24 or 36, but not to 10. In the primes version you may only step on prime numbers; in the times-table version, only on multiples of the chosen number.

Only one trail works. Every number that isn’t on the trail breaks the rule with all of its neighbours — so each step is a little factor or prime check.

Perfect practice for factors, multiples, primes and times tables, with a puzzle to solve along the way.

How to play Factor Trail

Find the only trail from start to flag, stepping across or down to numbers that follow the rule.

The rules

  1. Start on the ▶ square and finish on the ⚑ square.
  2. Each step goes across or down to a neighbouring square — never diagonally, never back onto your trail.
  3. Factors & multiples: the next number must divide the current one, or be divisible by it. Primes: step only on primes. Times table: step only on multiples of the chosen number.
  4. Exactly one trail works.

Playing here

  1. Choose a rule — factors & multiples, primes, or a times table — and a grid size, then press New Puzzle.
  2. Start on the ▶ square. Tap (or drag across) squares next to the end of your trail to extend it, across or down.
  3. Tap a square already on your trail to go back to it.
  4. Reach the ⚑ flag. Hint shows the next step and why the other neighbours don’t work.

Questions

Is 1 a prime?

No — a prime has exactly two factors, 1 and itself. 1 has only one.

Can the trail touch itself?

The trail never runs alongside itself, so there is never a shortcut.

Is there always one trail?

Yes — every number off the trail breaks the rule with all its neighbours.
